What Should I Do in Case of an Accident or Damage? 🚗💥

Important: Always call emergency services at 112 in case of an emergency!

Steps to Take in Case of an Accident:

  1. Secure the Accident Site:

    • Secure the accident site to avoid further accidents. Turn on your hazard lights and set up a warning triangle (100m on country roads, 200m on highways). Wear a high-visibility vest when leaving your vehicle, especially on highways, country roads, and major busy roads in the city. Keep your vehicle lights on at night.
  2. Help People and Provide First Aid:

    • Ensure your own safety first, then help others. Do not put yourself in danger while helping others.
  3. Always Call Emergency Services:

    • Call emergency services at 110 or 112 in Germany; abroad, call 112. Always notify the police, especially if someone is injured or if medical assistance is needed.
    • The police will help you obtain the correct information from the other party in minor accidents. In case of major damage or personal injury, the police will document the accident. Important: Do not discuss liability at the scene, neither with the other party nor with the police.
  4. Document the Accident, Take Photos:

    • Take photos of the damaged vehicles, the accident site, skid marks, broken parts, the road, and anything else important. Detailed photo documentation can be useful.
    • Document the accident with data & sketches: Note the date and time of the accident, the location, and the direction of travel of the involved vehicles. Also, note the details of the other party, their license plate, and the license plates of any potential witnesses who left the scene. If there are witnesses present, ask for their names, phone numbers, and addresses.
  5. Is Your Vehicle Drivable? Do You Need a Tow Truck?

    • If you cannot continue driving, contact the emergency number provided on the first page.
